If you have a visa for Japan and intend to leave Japan and then return within the term of the visa you are wise to get a re-entry permit.
Without it you may have difficulty re-entering on the original visa.
If you are using a tourist visa and leave Japan, they usually just issue a new one when you return to Japan.
