Karaoke is VERY popular in Japan with people of all ages meeting at Karaoke places to take turns reading the words to the songs off the video screen and singing along into the microphone.
Japanese songs as well as some western ones are popular.
Some venues sell alcohol and many dont as it doesnt seem an essential ingredient to the fun!
(I need it before undertaking these ventures!!)

I have gone to Karaoke but my Japanese AND singing are not good enough to do it in Japanese
I sang some English ones and so did my friends!!
(But they didnt really understand the words )

why is karaoke soooooooooo big in japan?

Maybe it gives them a chance to express themselves and show emotion in a country where they cant usually do that
