I once had an opportunity to discuss this topic with a Japanese friend of mine, and this is what he explained to summarize his views on his religion as being Japanese:


Shinto is the religion that deals with all the matters of life

Budhism is the religion that deals with all the matters of death.

He explained that you are usually (very often) born into Shinto rituals, and die into Budhist rituals.

So in his opinion, the two religions compliment each other and are part of life and dead as we all are.

P.S. Quick question about the links. If one brings information taht requires quoting from (let's say Wikipedia), Is it possible to put the reference to respect the author's right to get credit for it or to substain one's point?
