EDIT: Sorry -- I meant to post this as a response to a question I can't even find any more. I'll leave it up anyway.
Rosetta stone has four modes to read in: Romaji, kana, kanji and furigana. There's a place on the screen to click on, to determine which one you will see. You can switch back and forth at any time, although for a few reading screens and most writing screens the program itself will determine the script.
I don't recommend Romaji for almost any purpose -- it will really slow you down. When I used it, I started out with kana and eventually switched to kanji. With respect I disagree with a previous contributor who suggests that going with Kanji before you learn kana is like trying to run before you walk. The earlier you use kanji the better you'll understand the language.
Several people told me early that you have to learn kanji really to understand Japanese. I didn't know what they meant then, but I do now. When I see a screen of all kana now, it almost looks like gibberish to me.
In any event good luck. It's a pretty good program. There are a few issues I have with it, particularly that they teach you to use personal pronouns a lot -- especially "watashi" and "anata." I've learned over the months (and now years) that the Japanese don't use these pronouns very often, and now I almost never use "anata," (I think it's considered slightly rude to use this once you know the person's name) and I don't use "watashi" unless I have a compelling reason.
