So my question is does anyone know of a good book or software that teaches you japanese?

Pimsleurs Japanese - Audiobook

I second that. Pimsleur is great, been using it for just over a week now and im already beginning to pick up on a lot of stuff, and beginning to get a feel for how the language works and comes together.

You can buy it, or you can be like me and download it ...Dont hate though, i promise i'll pay em the day I'm good enough to set foot on Japan

Rosetta Stone

I was thinking about getting Rosetta stone wh I get enough money. I have a few questions though. How does it teach you the katakana, hiragana, and kanji? Also does it allow you to write in those or only romanji? Thanks in advance.

Rosetta Stone teaches you by showing you images and making you memorize and associate their meaning through the words and sentences. It sort of builds you up to learn the basics of Japanese the same way a person learns there first language, but is extremely effective. It doesn't really teach you any Kana whatsoever though but lets you turn it on during the lession in case you do want practice reading in japanese. I could suggest any number of books about how to write Kana, but they are all really the same, you just have to practice and follow along. However if you have a nintendo DS, try getting a game called Japanese Tutor that lets you use the DS stylus to write Kana and teaches you the strokes which is what im sure you were looking for.
