Japanese Bachelors Degree 14 Years, 7 Months ago Karma: 0
I apologize if this is the wrong forum, or if this has all ready been posted (tried searching but didn't find anything), and if it is please direct me to an appropriate thread.

I am looking to get a bachelors degree in Japanese, but I would ideally like to study in Japan. I know their are a lot of programs for Japanese in Japan, but none that I can find offer it as an accredited degree.

If there really aren't any schools like that I was wondering if anyone knew of any good programs, or schools within the USA that offer a study abroad program that will give me an accredited Japanese degree? I would like to start the enrollment process ASAP since I wasted a lot of time since I graduated High School due to my own stupidity (I'm 21 now). My grades in High School were less than stellar (approx 2.5 GPA, 28 ACT), so super high class schools are kinda out of my league. For me, local schools aren't the best option and would much rather have a school where I would be required to dorm. Though, this would be most schools so that isn't to much of a concern.

Online classes and such are in my opinion a poor way to learn a language. In addition I am rather horrible at the motivation and have a hard time learning anything from online courses, so that really isn't an option.

The importance of an accredited degree to me is that I want to have the option to continue my degree at a latter point if that is something I choose to do, as well as qualifying for positions and such that require an accredited degree.

I really do appreciate any suggestions, and thank you for taking the time to read my post.

You won't really find any degree courses specialising in Japanese language itself. Usually most courses would include the language as part of a module for a specialised field. For example Business with Japanese; The majority of the course would be modules dedicated to business but you would also have a module for Japanese, which would still be accredited for when you finish.

Probably the closest thing to what you might want to look for would be somthing along the lines of a Intercultural & Language studies course, which would be a course where languages take more priority but you learn other modules related to said languages like communication, culture studies, sociology etc. Although iv found, taking an example of said course in my country (was interested in it), that you might have to take an additional language and also have some proficiency in either one or both languages before commencing the course.

But yeah, a degree that soley teaches Japanese language itself either VERY few and far between or none at all. Usually for soley learning a language itself, the best accreditation you can get would be a certificate or diploma. As said, usually you have to go into a specific field that also caters for a module in learning Japanese along with it.

Check any national education databases online and see if you can find any courses you may be interested in.

I know you may have been asking someone specifically from the US but i thought id throw in some information also. If you guys have a said national database of colleges/courses etc then have a look around, if any courses might catch any interest then contact the college and see if they offer any study exchanges etc

Thanks a lot for the advice.

I wasn't really looking for a Japanese language only degree, but more a Japanese language and culture.

Is it okay to get general degree that includes Japanese as a focus to be able to enroll into a graduate school if I choose to do so at some point in the future?

Id say it won't be a problem. Iv seen graduate courses that would have relevancy to langauge and culture. Usually though you would be focusing in on somthing more specific rather than a broad general view. Somthing like focusing in on Translation, Interpreting, Sociology, Intercultural studies etc. Basically branching off from the broad general cirriculum you once had and focusing and improving in on one or two specific areas. The types of courses offered depends on the college so researching more on the colleges/universities that offer such courses would have to be looked at.
