Hi Megumi and welcome

Congrats on learning them both!
I agree with you that it does not matter which people learn first, if they are living outside Japan.
For those learning inside Japan I still think katakana is useful first.. like Petina says, it can help us avoid surprises sometimes!!

I still don't know more than a few kanji!

Ganbarimasho!

well depends on how you want. the ones i know:
find a teacher. normally universitys and colledges has them, but you will have to pay i think.
the other way is to buy a book or video lessons - it costs less, but you will have to dig something a lot if you dont understand some parts.
and the last, most risky, is over the internet, using free sites. but they lack of a ammount of knowledge you can get - it will be only basics.

Hi Saskatu

Do you mind if I ask if it is reading and writing or listening and speaking that you want to learn?
Or both?
Is it because you are coming to Japan?
Or for another reason?
Maybe if we know what you want to learn we can give better suggestions

well basicly to learn to understand and speak you dont need to learn the "letters". i think for self entertainment its ok to find something on the internet - try them out and see do you like it.

sure, if it is just for entertainment it doesn't matter.
If you actually want to live in Japan and communicate, katakana is a good place to start as it will help you read menus and signs and also knowing katakana helps understand pronunciation.
