You know in traditional Japanese culture, we should respect older people (even one year older) "Senpai" is a good word to express our respect and helps us to make a good relationship with older people. So we use to use it even in private. But now Japanese society and culture is changing day by day. Younger people don't like to use the word. It's just my opinion.
