Japanese guys vary from place to place. In Tokyo you can find modern men that will have more in common (relationship wise) to western men because of the tourism and diversity in Tokyo. Westerners tour there all the time and they bring their culture with them, this is why you will see less traditional relationships there. In more rural areas though, many people tend to follow "tradition" so men are less into dating foreigners and treat their women more "traditionally" aka with less respect.
