Take a 1000 yen banknote. You'll see the guy on it. He's Natsume Soseki, an author from the Meiji period. In his works he has used this saying:
Tsuki ga kirei desu ne?
Which literally means: "The moon is beautiful, isn't it?"
This is actually an equivalent to "I love you"
You see they talk about the moon and think about love!

The truth is that Japanese hide their thoughts behind words...must understand the language and culture if you want to know their feelings and thoughts. Or just asking questions directly is the best way to know what you want to know.
