I live in Toronto/Canada. I've been playing Kendo for ten years now and basically hold the bottom of the class in my club.
Kendo in Toronto is excellent compared to anything outside Japan or Korea. There are two eight Dan Sensei that come to our club and numerous seventh dan Sensei. If you don't understand what that means, you don't understand good quality kendo.
Kendo in japan varies from crappy public Dojos to Dojos that YOU WOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED TO PRACTICE IN.
For foreginers wanting to practice Kendo in Japan you will likely either be totally ignored or nearly killed for daring to visit some clubs. Even if you have an endorsement from your sensei. Frankly, unless you are playing at a national level you should forget it.
There are some groups that arrange kendo visits comprised of foregniers for the sole purpose of kendo. This is a little more accepted. Kinda like a tour bus of crappy white guys (lol!) Ask your Sensei or a Sensei in your community about it.

If you want good videos of Kendo on Youtube. (and there are tons) Use words like Best, Champion, Finals, All Japan Kendo Championship, World Kendo Championship. Once you have learned a little more you can start typing in specific names of the best players and sensei. Don't overlook Korea also. Their Kendo/Kumdo is second only to Japan.

I want to do Kendo. I was thinking of starting a Kendo club here in my tow but, I wasn't sure of the rules and with no real teacher, it would just be guys in armor hitting each other with sticks, right?

Hopefully one day I can learn this discipline to share with my kids...
