sorry if this is in the wrong spot, but i heard that 1 american dollar is 99 yen? i was wondering what kind of prices there are. for instance how much would a cup of coffee be in yen and american?

It all depends on where you go. Komeda coffee shop have a morning service that includes a boiled egg, a buttered piece of toast and a coffee for around 350yen. Mr Donuts has okawari American coffee, that means they will keep refilling your cup, my best effort was 4 refills, not bad at around 300yen. Starbucks was around 330 yen for a tall Sumatran coffee recently. And of course vending machine coffee is around 120yen per can. These prices may vary a little but they are pretty much what you would expect pay all over Japan.

I just moved back to the States are spending five years in rural Shimane ken.

I've found that many prices for basic goods are about the same.

A meal out can cost about the same - no tipping in Japan can save you a little.

Certain things are cheaper here in the US - movie tickets, gasoline, fruit, etc.

Some things were cheaper in Japan.

But it really is about the same.

The biggest thing about living in Japan for any length on time is that you have to stop converting everything you spend into your home currency and just start thinking in yen. And then you can judge the value of something based on other goods/services you need in Japan at Japan prices. There is nothing worse than a whiny gaijin going on and on about how things in Japan are more expensive than back in the home country.
