Again:

If it is only 2 weeks, ask your service provider if international roaming will work in Japan (it depends on what system you have).
If they say yes - happy days!
If they say no - you can rent a phone at the airport here.

The short answer is yes, it works.

The device must be unlocked so that you can change the sim or microsim.

Some vendors sell or rent sim cards. I cannot post links so I have to advise you to Google it from there.

You can purchase a magic jack phone in USA and attach it to your computer. You can use it anywhere in a world.
