Bringing money into Japan. 13 Years, 12 Months ago Karma: 3
Hi all, I was just watching the "How to #59 - Cash Credit Cards ATM" Video and I got a Question, i searched the forum and couldn't find anyone who asked, so if someone already did I'm sorry.

He said we should bring cash with us on hand, I'm presuming he means carry-on.

when i was visiting the US, the law was we couldn't bring more than 10K into the country (anymore i think would have been taxed, not quite sure sorry).

Anyways my Question is can we bring as much money as we need into the country or is there a limit, taxes etc

Thank you

It's somthing that is particularly hard to get information on. The man on the scene (Japan Channel man ) mentioned he brought 25,000 Austrailian dollars with him when he first came to Japan, which for my currency is about 20,000 euros (so its ALOT of money). So there possibly may not be such a problem with a cash or currency limit for Japan.

Having said that, you will possibly have to declare your cash by customs when you arrive (I think you have to in most countries if your cash is over a certain amount).

Id say send an e-mail to your own country's Japanese consultate and just ask them. They will possibly have a better answer

Yes, when leaving or arriving at some countries they require you to declare amounts of money (different limits, different countries.. $10k is common)
Partly to help stop criminal activity.. but if they can see you are coming to Japan for a period of time they will understand.
On entering Japan you must complete a declaration.. just tell them then

Thank You all so much, I just checked this website and it says we can't bring in more than "Money: 1 million yen worth (regardless of form or currency"

The information you refer to is over 4 years old.

We can bring in more that 1 million yen BUT WE MUST DECLARE IT TO CUSTOMS.
