Not as much as in other countries.

I always advise people coming here to just bring cash.
Many restaurants, shops and other places don't take credit cards.
(The exchange rates from most banks on credit card accounts are usually a rip off too.
i.e. buy it here in yen and get charged a fortune in your own currency by your bank!)

Japan in general is mainly a cash based society. Not many (although some do) establishments accept credit cards etc but it's better to have cash with you and your debit card to take money out.

It's a perfectly safe place to carry cash with you. I probably had about 400 euros worth of yen cash on me at all times while i was there and didn't feel worried about having that much with me

its just going to feel weird to me haha. I am so use to having all my money in the bank at all time and just using my debit card where ever i go. I have never been to a place that doesn't accept Debit or credit around here haha

This is actually something that's been preying on my mind aswell. I'm also used to just having a debit card on me because in my country, carrying cash is not a great idea. As I'm applying to the JET Program, my friend suggested that I take about ?50 000 in cash with me and withdraw the rest of what I'll need at the airport before we go to the three day training sessions in Tokyo. Do you think that ?50 000 would be enough for an initial amount in cash?
