Hello!
I saw a few threads and some had to do with working in Japan as a biochemist or professor that teaches in English; however, I could not find anything about biology opportunities in Japan. In the forum, I have read that unless one performs a specific and specialized job, it is difficult to work in Japan. So, my question is how hard would it be for a person who has a PhD in Biology/ Ecology/ Evolution to get a job in Japan? (I am not sure how popular field biology or ecology is in Japan). About how many years of experience would that person need? And on average, how much could they expect to make?
I really appreciate your responses!
Nadia

It can be hard to get proper information regarding overall work in Japan. It is possible, but generally it will depend on the job and it's details. I would first try research job sites with offers in Japan and see if you come across anything, if you did it might give you an overall idea what to expect in requirements and what you get out of the job.
Generally, what iv come across about jobs (not all, but some) in Japan is that you require:
- Education (at least a Bachelors Degree, but generally the higher your qualifications the better)
- Work Experience (at least a couple of years experience in your field)
- Langauge Competency (Commanding a very high level of Japanese)
- Japanese Certificates: If you wanted to practice or become Certified to work in certain related areas you have to do the required licensed Japanese certificates to prove you're capable of work. For example becomming a Doctor, Dentist etc
Generally why teaching English is No.1 job for Foreigners (and also possibly the easiest to get work for) is because it doesn't have the same restrictions as the above, you just need a Bachelors degree in any discipline.

Yeah, I have searched and searched for biology jobs in Japan but I cannot find anything online. I think part of the problem is that I am searching in English and that I am searching from a computer in the U.S. What have you heard about biology in Japan? If I do have a PhD and some good experience, would I have a good chance of being a biologist in Japan? How much could I expect to make?

I am not sure how popular in general biology is, but I do know that the Emperor does marine research, so you would definitely be following a good and accepted precedent.

I think if you want to do any job in Japan, you had better get started learning japanese to a native level. Why would you think you'd have a chance getting a job like that in japan without knowing any japanese? How many foreigners do you see working technical jobs that don't speak the native language?
