Out of intrest would bands and musicians need any visas to proform in Japan or do they get a free pass to do some gigs?

Yup, well in regards if you mean by performing in a professional sense and performing for money, you will need a Visa (Entertainers Visa). Nothing wrong though with playing some music recreationally, two friends of mine whom I travelled in Japan with are Jazz players and were invited to play some music in a Jazz club in Kyoto by the owner for a night, just for fun though
