Japanese are more open in internet I think...and not only they but all of us. We would preffer to say much more about ourselves and our emotions to a totally strange person in cyber space than to our friends ... maybe japanese/many people/ are scared that if they show their real feelings they might get hurt or laughed at or misunderstood. I'm scared to show my deepest feelings to my friends and family but in internet is different because I feel more secure. It's good to be yourself!

Take a 1000 yen banknote. You'll see the guy on it. He's Natsume Soseki, an author from the Meiji period. In his works he has used this saying:
Tsuki ga kirei desu ne?
Which literally means: "The moon is beautiful, isn't it?"
This is actually an equivalent to "I love you"

You see they talk about the moon and think about love! One mystery less...

The truth is that Japanese hide their thoughts behind words...must understand the language and culture if you want to know their feelings and thoughts. Or just asking questions directly is the best way to know what you want to know.

I have read books on Japan, and they said that the Japanese rarely talk directly and tell you what they are thinking, and that they rarely give you a direct, ?no" answer.

The reason (so the book stated) was because in Japan, for the last few thousand years, speaking directly what you were thinking or saying the word ?no? could get your head cut off. So, a culture developed where the Japanese people would speak very vaguely and never say the word ?no? directly to another person, but would say "no" in an indirect manner using other words. Especially to a person of higher social status.

When you?re unarmed you don?t tell a Samurai, who has a sword,?NO? when he asks you for something, or tells you to do something. The art of speaking vaguely arose in Japan because of this fear of being killed on the spot for displeasing or offending those who were of a higher status.
