Ordering food and drinks 12 Years ago Karma: 0
Hello there

I'm traveling to Tokyo this weeks and wan't to try all sorts of stuff.
Is it difficult to order stuff when you can't read the cards. Do I make them feel uncomfortable when they can't understand me?

I tempted to just walk around and go into whatever place looks good to me.
Just exploring parts in the city, and i don't like to get all the eyes on me and people thinking what the hell is he doing here.

Thanks

[hide][/hide]If (you can't read a menu card){
if the photo of the stuff is on the menu card, you can point at it.
If there is no photo on the menu card you maybe be annoyed. If the restaurant you visited have well-trained waiters, they will be help your choice with pleasure. Many restaurants have well-trained waiters and some doesn't have them.
}

If you visit some hotel restaurant or classy restaurant, the restaurant maybe have a English menu.

Many restaurants have a menu card with photo, some doesn't have it.

What foods do you want to eat?
Milaneze doria(Saizeriya /299 yen)?
Gyunabe-don(Yoshinoya /280 yen)?
Mcdonalds 100 yen hamburger?
Various kinds of rice balls(a convenience store /100~~200 yen)?
Various kinds of ramen?
Tempra?

If you want to eat low price food of Japan, you had better search about good restaurants before visit Japan.
If you want to eat classy food, the staff of the classy restaurant will help you.

Important thing in the end, most Japanese can't speak English. Sometimes you can make conversation by means of writing in English,if you have a note and a pen.

About exploring parts in the city.
Tourist spot...No problem. Walk where you want in comfort and no one will be surprised.
A shopping street...I think you will walk in comfort, too. It is not strange that travelers walk shopping streets in Tokyo.
Residential area near a railway station or a highway...I think you will not be annoyed by curious eyes.
Quiet residential area in a suburb...Sometimes I,Japanese get all the eyes on me in quiet residential area. Foreigner will get so,too.
Tokyo is a international metropolitan. I think your travel in Tokyo will be in comfort. I hope so.

Thank you for the reply I'm looking forward to enjoy all different sorts of meals, which i don't get in Europe.

Especially I happy to eat good ramen and tempra kind of things.
I want to try more sea food cause I haven't found something that i really like yet except of sushi.

I just don't want to annoy the people living there if I try to order food with no actual clue what it comes out but that's exactly what make things interesting.

For me this is going to be a journey to see an other culture and I really like the quit and peaceful way of what you hear about Japan. I'm going to learn new things and explore more of the world without makeing any trouble.

Greetings Tom

Talking about tempra,
I recommend TENYA for you. Because TENYA provides low price and delicious tempra every time.
If you want to classy and reasonable price tempra in central Tokyo, you need a knowledge.
For example, I like Nihonbashi TENMATSU,the tempra-restaurant. Because Tendon(bowl of rice with tempra) of Business Lunch Time(11:00~14:30) is 920 yen and this is a reasonable price.
If you miss the Business Lunch Time, I think that the lowest price dinner of the TENMATSU is 2625 yen, Tokusei-Tendon(special bowl of rice with tempra). 2.8 times price. You will understand that you need a knowledge for a reasonable price food in Japan.

Every restaurant has different service time or don't have it. And many restaurants in business office-buildings area has their own lunch-service-time.

Or if you want to experience a classy service with high price, I recommend the reservation of the restaurant where you want to go.

Talking about ramen,
I'm not worried about a ramen price. You maybe find 390(cheap) ~700(normal) ~1000(expensive) yen ramen. There are many small ramen-shops in Japan. Every shop compete for custom soup of the ramen. Tonkotsu-soup(based on pork bone) is a hot item for travelers from Europe, Shoyu-soup(based of soy-source) is popular and classic in Tokyo, Miso-soup smells sweet, Shio-soup(based on salt) is not so salty, and etc.

Good trip!
