I studied Japanese at University in England for 3 years but I learnt more in Japan in the first 3 months I was there!!!
The text book learning was a good foundation but the day to day practice was the best for speaking naturally and, most importantly, listening practice!!

Hi Petina!
I found the same thing.
Being here and listening and speaking Japanese 24/7 sure makes one learn faster!!!!!!
It is a neccessity if we want to eat, go anywhere, do anything or even talk to anyone, isn't it!!

I agree. There is no better way to learn Japanese than having it screamed at you and no better motivation to learn than being called "Gaiijin baka" (Stupid foreigner). Overwhelmingly more Japanese people are politer than that, but those few individuals tend to stand out.

Nobody was rude to me the whole time I was in Japan but I agree that being there makes us improve more quickly.
It is also great to learn the language the way it is spoken naturally rather than in a classroom.

I think Japanese people wont usually tell us when we make mistakes with our Japanese vocab, grammar or pronunciation.
But if we ask our Japanese friends (onegai!!) to correct us and they see that it is doing us a favour they will help us.. and that is useful!!

Yeah. I felt the same way when I had a Japanese exchange student live with me. I didn't want to correct her because I thought I'd be rude to do so. Then she asked us to correct her English, and she got much better! Now I want to learn her language and experience her culture.
