Watch anime all you want, it's bound not to be realistic at all and you will learn no relevant and/or useful japanese from it.

I don't really agree with this statement-- watching any visual media is a good way to pick up new words or colloquialisms that wouldn't often be taught in books, and also promotes a more natural way of speaking. Granted, copying cartoon characters is not advisable-- you wouldn't try to speak like Spongebob, for instance, but the dialogue is still solid. I've learned a couple of languages in the past, and I find watching kids movies and cartoons to be particularly good, since the dialogue is focused mostly at a younger person's level, making it easier to follow.

That said, you'd already need to know a fair bit of Japanese to do this-- translations are always going to be the reader's interpretation. Even statements as simple as "sou [desu] ka" are translated as anything from "oh yeah?" to "really?" to "you sure about that?" depending on the context. In longer sentences, even repeating verbatim what the characters said could be incorrect.

Noctis, I would suggest watching slice of life animes, if you're interested in that sort of thing, since they don't go off talking about space ships or weapons or anything like that. It's probably the closest thing you'll get to real life dialogue in an anime (though you'd have to have some particularly odd friends to benefit completely).

Littlegreengirl is right - anime will teach you little to no useful Japanese. If you still insist upon learning Japanese from video entertainment sources, I recommend trying out a live-action Japanese show or movie... Bloody Monday is a very good one.

@thesgogghoth

Naturally I know that watching anime ot other (WHEN YOU HAVE ALREADY LEARNED THE LANGUAGE TO SOME DEGREE) may be useful for HEARING EXCERCISE but not to ACTUALLY LEARN THE LANGUAGE.
Which is what i meant in my comment.

Thanks~~

Sorry-- yes, I agree. I think I was assuming OP would use animes after spending a good deal of time studying from books/with fluent speakers. Visual media is a supplementary tool at best. Apart from very repetitive phrases (such as 'honto' 'sugoi' and 'sou [da|desu] [ne|na|ka]' ) very little can be picked up. Since we're not kids anymore, we can't spend 2 or 3 years passively listening to a language to pick it up (that, and the translations are often interpretive, and rarely literal).

But I still don't agree that animes won't help you learn the language, since you're still learning until you know every word of said language (which is, of course, impossible to do). You'll invariably pick up on subject matter teachers and books are unwilling to cover (which may be, for instance, taboo or impolite, but which you would have to know to be fluent anyway).

I actually don't suggest trying to learn Japanese from anime ^^' i recommended it for listening practice to get used to the speed that most people talk in but if you just started out leaning then your probably going to get pretty confused. japanese used in anime isnt exactly...natural japanese. people in real life talk different from the anime style.

I think it'll be better for you to watch Japanese drama. it's more realistic (well..some of them >.> and in the situations in the dramas they speak as if they would in real life.

sorry if this isn't the answer your looking for but i had to do the same thing when i first started out learning. you can find a bunch of dramas at dramacrazy.net hope this helps!
