Japan in general is mainly a cash based society. Not many (although some do) establishments accept credit cards etc but it's better to have cash with you and your debit card to take money out. It's a perfectly safe place to carry cash with you. I probably had about 400 euros worth of yen cash on me at all times while i was there and didn't feel worried about having that much with me
