Moving to Tokyo 14 Years, 5 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi, I'm moving to Tokyo in a month or two with work and would appreciate some local advice on where to live in Tokyo. My rental budget is pretty good (300-400k a month) and I'm looking for something in central Tokyo that Roppongi-itchome station is easy to get to. I'm a single Australian guy, not really into night-life that much, so some suggestions outside of Roppongi would be very useful. Even though I'm moving there on a permanent basis, I've never actually been to Tokyo before!

Thanks in advance.

P.S. The "how to ..." youtube videos are very useful. I'm sure that's saved me from doing a couple of embarrassing things already.

Hey Aussie

Yeah, I love those "how to" too!

I notice a whole bunch of ads have popped up on the left side of the page for accom in Tokyo, because of your question
Google is clever

Yes, google is handy for seeing flats and working out prices. Seem to be plenty of english friendly rental property sites as well. Not so clever at the moment trying to sell me teenage female fashion.

I'm more interested in views on personal experiences of central Tokyo living. Roppongi is the well known expat hangout, what other places should I consider? Any comments on what sort of discount you could get in the current market also useful. In Hong Kong where I live at the moment property is booming but I think that's not as likely to be the case in Tokyo.

Soo how has it been in Tokyo? It's been 5 months since you have made a post. Share experience.

Hey,
If you need an expert or any advices, I hope you would like to hire a best contractor from angieslist. Because they have a great service resource in the market place. They can also provide moving advice.

Well, I've been in Tokyo for 3 months and I must say the experience has been pretty good so far. Yes, things are very different to living in a western country although I think having lived in Hong Kong for a couple of years really made the transition easy on cultural shock. Obviously it's different here, but I knew the types of things to expect to be different and what challenges I would have so it hasn't been a problem for me.

Work helped with most of the admin so getting alien registration, re-entry permits, bank account, permanent accommodation was all pretty easy. I found an amazing flat in Akasaka which I'm very happy with. It's not as western friendly as Roppongi, but still no problems getting around with limited Japanese.

Job next year now that I'm pretty settled is to improve my language
